With some fundamental strategies for doctoral supervision in place, it’s possible to provide supervision and advice professionally and to reach the goals set in each case. This includes clarifying expectations for both parties through discussion, assigning responsibility and tasks clearly, and overcoming challenging situations both psychologically and regarding content. In this way, good supervision will serve as an important factor for a successful doctorate.
In this workshop, participants deal with their individual circumstances of supervision and advice. Through exercises they will familiarise themselves with established techniques for supervising doctoral candidates and train their skills of communication with regard to good and co-operative supervision and advice. The workshop contents in detail are as follows:
  • Basics of supervision: Goals and benefits for both sides
  • Varieties of supervision: The diversity of available practices
  • A doctoral degree – yes or no? Criteria for accepting those interested in doctoral research
  • Managing expectations and supervision agreements: Mutual responsibility, establishing roles and imposing limits
  • Nothing is achieved without discussion: Preparing – execution – follow-up
  • When the going gets tough: Difficult situations – conflicts –dealing with power
  • From finding a topic to the final phase – all to plan? Accompanying doctoral candidates through the doctoral process
  • Supervision of doctoral candidates: My next steps
