ASDEX Upgrade: Research for the energy of the future
The IPP operates one of the world's most important large-scale facilities on the way to a fusion power plant in Garching near Munich: ASDEX Upgrade. This tokamak-type fusion facility is not designed to generate electricity. Instead, the fundamental principles for future power plants, which will be significantly larger than ASDEX Upgrade, are being researched here. During a fusion experiment, ASDEX Upgrade's vacuum vessel becomes the hottest place in our solar system.
This film shows the main elements of the large-scale facility in 6:19 minutes and explains the basics of nuclear fusion research.
